- According to statistics, fishing is the world's number
- one sport. Certainly it is its oldest sport. In excess of
- thirty million Americans engage in fishing each year. This
- sport can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of whether they
- be rich or poor, young or old. The equipment used may vary
- from a mere cane pole and line to an expensive rod and reel
- set. While early man, no doubt, fished to obtain food, the
- modern fisherman participates in fishing for its recreation
- value. A common scene is that of the older grandfather and
- his young grandson together fishing the waters of a stream.
- For hundreds of years, men have gone fishing to escape
- the worries of their life. For example, fishing has been a
- favorite sport of many Presidents. The joys of fishing are
- different for each fisherman. Some like to fish because it
- gives them a chance to be outdoors, away from the confining
- office. Yet, others take pleasure in the exciting fight of
- a strong game fish. Many prefer to sit quietly on the bank
- of a stream, watch the ripples in the water, and think. In
- any event, no one loses in the sport of fishing. Whether a
- fish is caught, or not, each fisherman comes home a winner.
